Mataano Twins Have Their Eye on Revolutionizing African Fashion

The mataano sisters are willing to show the world that we're not all war mongers and pirates - CNN Interviews the Mataano fashion designers about their ambitions and expansion plans to Africa

Mataano are now taking on the world. Here is another new video which is an Interview with the two sisters at a restaurant. Apparently the girls make their clothes for 'young and successful women.' It kind of like they're really making fashion for themselves.

One other thing I wanted to touch on is when the girls are asked, "Have you been back to your homeland?", their answered in the negative but pointed to the fact that they're rather working at other countries in Africa such as how they have runway shows in South Africa and were invited to Ethiopia - which is as close as it will ever get to Mogadishu.

Mataano Interview with Fashion Designers Idyl & Ayaan Mohamill - Video

Mataano Facebook fans
In the Interview Idyl says that their Facebook page has around 2000 fans. The correct number is 2,578 as of March 29th 2011. I just hit Like on their Facebook fan page. If you ask me though, that's not a lot fans. Compare that with Farxiyo Fiska's Facebook fan page here and that has nearly 20,000 fans. So Mataano fashion marketing isn't doing well at all.

Mataano were on Oprah Show
Not exactly the show for themselves as there were other designers on the show but the Mataano girls are the only Somali business aspirants that appeared on any Major show. I am not including K'naan as he's an international star - but even he was never on Oprah. This means Mataano are lucky enough to have that much exposure and yet their business isn't reflecting this yet! Here is the video of Idyl and Ayan on Oprah's show.

The Mataano Collection - Video Winter

If you're into fashion then you probably know that runway shows aren't for Muslim women. So, what you will see in the video below - Style It Up~Boston Fashion Wk '10: Fashion Expose- Designer Mataano - isn't for non-western women. Mataano make clothes for the Western women, not for Arabs (those in Arabian countries and other Muslim countries.) So, if you're Somali girl that wears Hijaab, don't bother cussing at the Mataano Sisters for now making clothes for you! It is just their business and you're not the target, sadly. Perhaps in the future, the Mataano twins will start making clothes for young women from their home country - wouldn't that be an achievement.
